w00t.

Seven days. Seven days until I can get the hell out of St. Aedan and never go back. Ever. Will I miss it? Hell fucking no. Refer to former blog posts to see why.

Moving off that topic, I’d like to say I’m quite happy with Gentoo right now. I’ve got a small system, none of the bloat that you get with normal installs. I know exactly what’s installed and where. I’ve got my 2.6 kernel compiled with the grsec patch. Text only. I’m typing from lynx. =)

Jea. Short update. Kthxbye.

Consider the gentoo…

I’ve been reading the gentoo documentation, and boy does this sound like one great installation. This isn’t your everyday installation like debian or an anaconda-powered install. This drops you into a shell and lets you do as you like. You can even use IRC while you install!

Gentoo seems to be all about choices and DAMN it has a lot of them. I think I’m going to redo kato as a terminal-only gentoo system, done totally by hand, with a custom kernel. Uber-geeky.

But come on man, how much more awesome can an installation that drops you in a shell and gives you total freedom be! You even get to compile gcc!

Oh yes, and I feel a quick bit on the NixSec link in the menu is needed.

Tal0n put a link to owlmanatt.com on the links page of nixsec.com, and I wouldn’t feel right unless I returned the favor. I don’t really give a shit what you think of them. They do have some good stuff on their site, and they do have some exploits on their site. It isn’t my problem. It’s an honor thing, I’m not advocating cracking or anything.

And they do have my PHP text in /papers.

Custom kernel goodness!

Just spend the past 18 hours building and perfecting my custom kernel build. 2.6.6_Custom.1 is now running on Bell.

It took seven builds, loads of tinkering, and a few google searches, but it works great.

KDE loads a bit slower, but I can feel the box respond faster, load things faster, and have these stupid KDE icons bounce faster when I start a KDE core application.

Some notes.

1. Never build the support for your root filesystem as a module.
2. Never build harddrive support as a module.
3. When upgrading from 2.4.x to 2.6.x, you need new module tools. Otherwise, you’ll end up with three extra tries and a lot of wasted time / anger.
4. OSS > ALSA

And thank god for Linus’ book, without the paragraph on how X got ported to linux I would still be trying to get XFree support into the kernel.

RE: Hypocrisy to the extreme

Recall my previous posting about our religion teacher? Well, I’m about to take another stab at her. But first allow me to provide some backround into the shit that hit the fan today and triggered the series of events that prompt this entry.

Some girl was laughing about some other girl’s mom being in the hospital (which is funny) and then some other people started getting pissy with her about it. Then they said some stuff, blablabla. Standard junior-high shit.

So they go back inside after recess, and the religion teacher gets involved. No, it isn’t her fucking business. It’s the usual way things go. But she needs to entertain herself.

So, everyone switches classes, and the teacher has two or three people out in the hall. As usual, she’s trying to make them cry. Then once we’re all settled into class, the teacher bursts into the room and starts yelling at someone. This is the person she usually yells at. He had said something to one of the people she was yelling at at some point, which must automatically incriminate him. She was yelling at him for ‘NOT MINDING HIS BUSINESS’. She finally leaves, and then we all starts bitching at once.

‘WTF!?!?! WTF WAS HE DOING!?!? HE WAS SITTING IN FUCKING CLASS?!?!?!’
‘I hate her man!’
‘She needs to get a man!’
Etc etc.

Then we see her outside in the hall with the two people she had made cry, and she was back to being a two-faced bitch, an acting all buddy-buddy. She proceeds to do this for the rest of the period.

So how about we recap?

Ms. Teacher yells at students for not minding their business, while at the same time get involved with student affairs she has nothing to do with.

Ms. Teacher goes off on students who come to her door to ask get a book from their crate/backpack. She doesn’t like the three second interruption in class. What does she do today? She pisses away an entire period that she should be teaching the 6th (?) grade religion by getting involved in something she shouldn’t. Can we say class interuption to the extreme?

Ms. Teacher is a two-face.

Ms. Teacher yells at a student in our class who wasn’t involved. She has a history of yelling at this person, just for the hell of it. I’m not in the mood to tell more stories. Enough for today.

Laptop!

Got a new toy today. 33MHz laptop. =D

This puppy is great. It runs with a 33MHz Intel chip, 12mb of ram, 200mb hdd, and a monochrome screen. Also has a weird ball mouse you can put on it, or use a normal mouse. Had 28.8kb modem in the pcmcia slot, which is useless to me. At some point I may come across a pcmcia ethernet card, but until that day I won’t worry. I can move files around with (god help me!) floppies.

Speaking of floppies, I have a story for you.

Ok, this box came with windows95 on it, right? And I wanted linux on it. So first I needed to find a distro that came on floppies, as those are getting hellava rare. Looked into debian, but I ended up using slackware 3.3, thanks to this dude. Kudos to him, whoever he is. I never would of though of using slack.

So, I have my slack idea, and I head over to their site to download the stuff. Problem is, I have a hard time finding floppies. I have two bad ones, and one good one. So I begin installing with one disk. Every time it wanted the next disk, I’d download the image, format the disk, copy it over, install, and repeat. You try doing that 17 times. It took hours, but I now have a linux terminal-only laptop. I could probably get xfree on there, but I don’t want/need it’s slow annoyingness. I’m good with pico and ls.

The laptop had some ethernet adapter that went into the parallel port, but thanks to Xircom’s greed and proprietary cloak-and-dagger bullshit, it has no linux driver. Way to go, assholes. I can see why RMS founded the free software foundation now. I feel left out, just because I’m different. I’ll sue for discrimination.

Yea.
