MySQL Overhead

I was scrolling down a page of about 225 tables in PHPMyAdmin this morning, and I finally asked myself what the fuck the ‘Overhead’ column was supposed to mean. You know, that last, cryptic column in the listing of tables that has ‘–’ or ‘## bytes’ in it?

So I did some Googling and figured out what the fuck it is.

The overhead you’re seeing in phpMyAdmin isn’t anything to do with the MySQL settings. When records are deleted in MySQL, the space is never reclaimed until you optimize the table. Thus phpMyAdmin shows you how much space is “wasted” due to stuff that has been deleted. The user’s database frequently gets stuff deleted from it, (if you are using the email verification, alot [sic] of signups never get verified and automatically deleted. The online table and search results table hold tempoary info and so they bloat quite regularly. The busier the site, the more this will happen. That’s why optimizing those tables with high overhead frequently is important.

ZetaPets v3 Progress

As most of you know, I’m currently engaged in rewriting all of the Zetapets code, along with Tigress, Wulf, and Red.

Our deadline is the end of February, but to be frank, we don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting it done by then. We have made a colossal amount of progress in the past two months.

Why, just today I finished the mail system!

Awesome, innit? It took a lot of work and Javascript to get the UI to be so pretty, and it *still* needs a bit of tweaking. Thankfully, UI tweaks are all the mail system requires, and they’re very minor ones at that.

The battle lobby is almost done, from what I’m told. We’ve got the basics of the inventory system & shops done, too, but I haven’t touched those yet.

Hm. Hopefully we’ll be done by May 1st…

MySpace shoots itself in the foot

I’m not one much for spreading news stories around, but I need to call attention to this:

MySpace Shoots Itself In Foot

Basically, MySpace was a community that was rather uncensored before the big bad media company came and bought it. Aforementioned big bad media company tried pulling its typical censorship bullshit, and the community members got riled up.

Go big business!

Another year, another upgrade…

Top of the morning to ya, loyal readers. By the time I publish this post, the year will probably have rolled over into 2006, and another year will have closed quietly.

A lot of shit went down in 2005, but overall, I’d say it was a good year for everyone (except for the Linux desktop, because 2006 is probably going to be the year of the Linux desktop, too).

But hell, we’re better than half way through the decade now. It feels like just yesterday the entire world was sitting around their TVs, waiting for the end of the world due to the millenium bug. And god damn, that makes me feel old.

Ah well. Out with the old, in with the new, right? OwlManAtt.com is now running on WordPress 2.0, just in time for the new year. Zetapets v3 development progresses at a steady pace, and I still have yet to even ponder the idea of proofreading Mindwar.

So here’s to 2006, the year of the Linux desktop, the year that Zetapets releases some kickass features, and the year that SCOSUG finally kicks out the new fucking website, goddamnit.

Back to the salt mines…
